Borough: A foodie's paradise

Borough: A foodie's paradiseSituated in Southwark on the south side of the Thames, Borough is a cosmopolitan area in the heart of London, and is a favourite destination for those who enjoy delicious food.

flats to rent in Borough are also a popular choice, due to their excellent transport links, and the region is within easy reach of the financial and government centres. Plus, you'll have a variety of properties to choose from, including modern flats and converted Victorian properties.

History of the area
Archaeological evidence has shown the Borough has been a busy region as far back as prehistoric times, and it became a centre of trade around 43AD, after the Romans founded the city of Londinium. Due to the region's proximity to the River Thames, it has been a thriving area, and a prominent trading hub ever since.

Until Westminster Bridge was built, Borough High Street offered the only connection to London, north of the river, from the south. It therefore had a number of coaching inns and the region served as a major stopping point for traffic between London and south-eastern towns like Portsmouth and Dover, as well as travellers from the continent.

Borough Market
These days, Borough is a vibrant and bustling area, full of trendy pubs and restaurants, but the region is probably best known for Borough Market - a foodie's paradise where locals and tourists flock to find top-quality fresh ingredients and delicious artisan foods.

The market is situated under railway viaducts, many of which date from the 18th century. These provide shelter to market traders and their customers throughout the year, and also give the market a historic atmosphere.

Meanwhile, a number of speciality shops can also be found in the region, selling everything from delicious cheeses and small-batch roasted coffee, through to international wines and handmade chocolates.

Eat, drink and be merry
There's little chance of going hungry or thirsty in Borough. In addition to the gastronomic delights available from the market, there is a huge array of bars, pubs and restaurants in the area.

On weeknights, the local bars are popular spots for those who work in the area to stop off for an evening drink on their way home, and options range from German-themed bars with Oompa bands and Bavarian brews on tap, through to traditional British pubs with quiet and cosy atmospheres.

Restaurants range from specialty eateries and fine dining, through to street vendors and takeaways. And you're likely to find food of just about any kind in the region if you know where to look - Lebanese, Portuguese, African, Mexican, Thai, the list goes on and on.

Transport
London Bridge Station is a main transport hub, particularly to destinations towards the south-east and regular services are offered to destinations in Kent, Sussex and Brighton, as well as Waterloo, Charing Cross and Cannon Street in the centre of the capital.

What's more, significant improvement to the railway infrastructure will be ongoing until 2018, as part of the Thameslink Programme. The station concourse has recently been given a facelift and changes are being made to the station to increase capacity.

As well as mainline services, London Bridge Station connected to the Underground network, on both the Jubilee line and the King's Cross arm of the Northern Line. Borough Tube station is also on the Northern Line.
