Area Comments
A blend of the characters of Hampstead and Camden, Kentish Town is very funky, lively and cool. It's also got some of the nicest little streets in North London.
In many ways Kentish Town is an embarrassment of riches. It has some of the best access in town - just down the road is super-cool Camden and its market, and to the north is Hampstead, still the place to be seen amongst North London areas. But in Kentish Town itself there's a huge amount to do. It's got lovely streets, quiet, great walks around the city; there are excellent watering hole in these streets, both the cocktail bars and the excellent gastropubs of which there are a huge variety, such as the famous Bull and Gate.
Also, Kentish Town is an area of small independent traders. This is true both of its excellent local grocers whose goods reflect its strong multicultural mix, and of other goods. With many of the big names elsewhere, this is a place where independence is still strong. Mainstream shopping is no bother however with large stores nearby in Camden. There are good libraries, gyms and entertainments here as well.
The benefits of always being slightly overlooked from the development point of view has been that many of Kentish Town's properties are still as they have always been. There are splendid Victorian houses and terraces here, although of course there are also some estate dwellings. The Dartmouth Park area is also worth looking at with its very large (some 4 storey) houses, many of which have excellent gardens. It's easy to forget how close the area is to the Heath, but there are excellent two and three storey houses approaching that neck of the woods which are still bargains in relative terms.
