Hackney council cracks down on litterbugs
Officials in Hackney have taken steps to improve the cleanliness of the London borough's streets.
Environmental enforcement officers have been employed by the council, with each being given mobile phones equipped with video cameras to record littering offences.
There are 11 officers in total, issuing on-the-spot fines of £80 that are reduced to £50 if paid within two weeks.
Fiona Fletcher Smith, of Hackney Council, said that only a minority of people are dropping litter, but the move is intended to make the streets even cleaner.
"With over a thousand bins in Hackney, there's no excuse for not using one," she remarked.
The fines will also be issued to those who fail to clean up after dogs and come after the borough spent £9 million collecting litter from the streets in 2008.
Hackney was one of 11 boroughs selected to receive £30,000 each to help crack down on alcohol-related problems last month.
