Area Comments
One of the nicest places in the growing area of Newham, Plaistow is a predominately residential neighbourhood filled with great houses and currently pushing ahead with the huge urban regeneration which is affecting all of Newham.
Of course the area is known for its large council estates, but these are being gentrified along with others in the Stratford area, slowly being replaced by more sensitively planned council accommodation.
As with much of East London, it's only once you start looking around that you realise how green and growing Plaistow is, despite being a definitely urban neighbourhood. Plaistow Park is a great place for strolling, as is the East London Cemetery; as well as this the lovely Greenaway walk which runs from Hackney Wick to Beckton runs through here and allows a green and leafy walk through the heart of the East End. Amenities here include two leisure centres, cinemas and the typical East End markets. Although it's mainly a residential area, there are a good number of shops close by for the essentials, as well as lots of stores in nearby areas like Beckton and Canning Town.
It's extremely close, not just to transport into London and Essex (there are about 8 major stations on different tube lines and the DLR nearby), but is also well positioned to get to City Airport - one of the many reasons that City workers who need to get to the continent are beginning to seek out places to live in Plaistow and Newham in general.
Plaistow is safe, residential, multicultural and friendly. Its prices compare well with the surrounding neighbourhoods even as Olympic/2012 expectations and government and private investment push the area's housing upmarket. It's very much a place to buy. In terms of properties, the area is a mix of course, with the traditional Victorian terraces looking out over the green areas being amongst the most popular. There are ex-council flats, as well as conversions, and as with all areas of the East End, developable land is being chosen as sites for excellent waterside blocks. But in the main houses are the spine of the property here, ranging in size, mostly Victorian terraces, but all on the up. It's seriously affordable still, and becoming very much an in place with City and Docklands workers looking for a deal, and a keeping-it-real place to live.
