Earl's Court redevelopment gets the green light

Earl's Court redevelopment gets the green lightEarl's Court is set to undergo an overhaul after new proposals to revamp the area were recently approved.

The planning committee on Kensington and Chelsea Council, as well as Hammersmith and Fulham have approved new design plans for the Earls Court Masterplan and for the Empress State Building.

The Empress State Building will comprise of residential units, which will add to the residential floor space, or 340 new homes, to the overall masterplan area.

This new initiative will include the construction of 1,276 residential buildings, which will be located on the site of the Earls Court centre to form an Earls Court Village.

Over 7,500 will be built in the area as a while.

The aim of the development will be to provide resources and facilities for people on a range of different incomes.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council also said that a decent neighbourhood should feature predominantly low or medium rise houses, plus a mixture of flats and maisonettes.

Developer Capco explained that the development is "gaining momentum" and signifies a "milestone" in the project.

Gary Yardley, investment director of Capco, said: “We are delighted that our detailed proposals for Earls Court have been approved by Kensington and Chelsea Council and Hammersmith and Fulham Council.

"As well as creating a vibrant new part of London, the plans will act as an enormous boost to the economy, creating thousands of new homes and jobs and signalling an £8 billion investment in the local area.”

As part of the initiative, the historic Earls Court art deco exhibition centre will be knocked down with new homes built in its place.

In addition, Westfield's shopping centre will also be expanded, and some of the existing buildings in the area will be demolished to make way for 60,000 square metres of shops and homes.
