Road repairs reduce noise pollution for borough residents

Road repairs reduce noise pollution for borough residentsResidents of the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham are to benefit from a quieter A4. Transport for London (TFL) has begun works to resurface the A4 between the Hammersmith Flyover and Hogarth Roundabout with a quieter form of asphalt. The road is to be surfaced with 'superpave' in a bid to reduce the levels of noise pollution in the area.

It is hoped that minimal disruption to traffic on the busy road will take place through the resurfacing project, as TFL crews will be performing the work throughout the nights. The new form of asphalt is, according to TFL, more flexible, which helps to reduce the noise that traffic makes upon the road.

In order to further reduce traffic noise in the area, the concrete joints underneath the road are to be treated in order to improve stability. By improving the running surface's stability, traffic will make even less noise, meaning an added benefit to local residents. The resurfacing is due to continue throughout August, with lane restrictions taking effect between 10pm and 5am.

Councillor Victoria Brocklebank-Fowler, cabinet member for transport and technical services, said: “The A4 scythes our borough in two creating noise and pollution for local residents. The reduced noise from this special tarmac will be very welcome for residents living near the road. In the longer term the ultimate solution to virtually eradicate traffic noise and pollution is to replace large sections of the A4 – including the flyover – with a flyunder.”

It is being suggested by many residents of the borough that the flyover be replaced with a 'flyunder' in order to reduce noise pollution and improve the aesthetics of the area. Maintenance costs for the existing road have continued to increase since its emergency closure in 2011, which resulted in massive traffic jams throughout the city.

Proposals are suggesting that a tunnel road be built, which would greatly benefit people throughout the Hammersmith and Fulham Borough. Until any plans are finalised, the current works should help to dramatically reduce noise pollution levels.
