Hammersmith and Fulham: The borough of wellness

Hammersmith and Fulham: The borough of wellnessHammersmith and Fulham has been dubbed the 'borough of opportunity', after national figures revealed that health and fitness levels have led to a revival of sports and wellness projects in the region.

The borough was named as one of the top ten most active boroughs in London for adult participation.

This is according to data compiled as part of the annual Sport England Active People Survey 7. The results of the survey are measured by the number of people participating in sports at least once a week for 30 minutes.

The figures were released by Public Health England. It showed that residents in Hammersmith and Fulham have the lowest levels of obesity in London amongst adults. Nationally, the borough is sixth in the table, ahead of Camden, Lambeth, Wandsworth and Westminster.

The council has also unveiled a strategy to get more people involved in sport. This includes a ‘Let’s get going’ strategy to increase participation in sport and physical activity and to encourage people to lead healthier lifestyles.

Commenting on the findings, councillor Marcus Ginn, cabinet member for community care, said: "While taking good care of health and body is first and foremost our own personal responsibility, the council actively supports and promotes the wellbeing of residents through our sporting and healthy eating programmes.

"We are committed to getting children taking part in sports from a young age, getting adults back into sport and making the best use of our sports clubs, leisure and fitness centres, and schools’ sporting facilities."

It was also revealed that crime in the area has gone down. According to the Mayor's Office for Policing And Crime (Mopac) crime is down to an historic low in the borough after falling by 15 per cent or 3,295 crimes, last year compared to 2012.
