Area Comments

Gorgeous, sleepy and semi-rural, Hampton hugs the Thames, and is divided into three main areas - Hampton Hill, Hampton Wick and of course, Hampton Court.

Facilities here are those of a small town or large village. There's a very nice open air pool - and there aren't many of these left in London - a good football team, and good local schools including Hampton School, generally considered to be one of the top schools in the country. There are excellent walks to be had in nearby Bushy Park (and of course, it's very close to Richmond Park as well. Hampton is fantastic for water lovers and bird lovers, with plenty of riverside walks and great wetlands in Grand Junction Reservoir.

Transport into town is good, but the village centre is best enjoyed as just that - a very typical English village. It has a lovely village green, a couple of cafes and a few shops and local businesses; this is a place where you tend to meet your neighbours and chat in passing whilst pottering about in the centre. Overall, the ambience is wonderful - this is a village that offers a great deal of relaxation and a slower pace of life to anyone.

What's amazing about Hampton is the reasonable house prices for somewhere just a little way away from Richmond. There are new estates - though development is something that the residents are understandably concerned about - which offer very reasonable, but attractive houses. The best properties tend to centre around the church and the station. Roads like Ormond Avenue and those around it contain gorgeous family homes, often detached and with generous gardens (most gardens around here, even those in the more affordable range, tend to be good). In the western areas the property tends to be mid-war. There are also flats and conversions to be had, although these are found in greater number in Teddington.

Hampton is sometimes described as a "forgotten gem". Whilst it isn't forgotten, it's got a decent claim to being a gem: wonderful countryside, the river, a gentle pace of life and good prices, and an easy journey into town.
