Hampton Wick development plans are 'divisive'

A South-West London area has seen Mayor Ken Livingstone give the green light for a residential development project, but not all locals are in favour of the Richmond borough plans.

The controversial Jewson site development in Hampton Wick has divided opinion in the area, with the plans offering the prospect of more than 200 new apartments as well as a creche and nursing home – but threatening to create what local councillors described as an overly-dense zone.

Developers for the Sandy Lane site recently amended their proposals and applied for extra accommodation units, while agreeing to limit the block to five storeys, offering what for many would be a boost to Hampton Wick's housing stock.

But local councillors claimed that too big a strain would be placed on the local area and its road and transport links, suggesting that the proposed development exceeded the density limits of the London Plan.

Councillor Tony Arbour (Richmond) said: "Mr Livingstone's support for the scheme is based on 50 per cent affordable housing which is the adopted policy of Richmond's Lib Dem council, which has given both himself and the developer a nod and a wink that this scheme is acceptable."
