Area Comments

Another Eastern riverside area being gradually gentrified, Woolwich has wonderful views across the water on its northern frontier, a healthy town centre and good facilities, as well as affordable property for all - although as change hits, as waterside living becomes more important, and new development washes through, it's becoming more desirable.

The centre of Woolwich is a bustling town, pedestrianised, filled with the usual high street brands as well as some local independents. It's also home to a very good market. This is a thriving and multicultural area, a fairly cost-effective place to live, and its high street is friendly, busy and lined with a good range of cafes and nice independent eateries as well as the usual big names.

Woolwich has historically, like much of the area, had an industrial feel, so its construction is dictated by the docks, access to them, and so around the town centre is a tangle of little streets with small businesses, shops and cafes. It has however some good open spaces - Woolwich Common is small, but pretty, and Shooters Hill and Oxleas Wood are close, as is Plumstead Common, possibly the nicest in the area. Woolwich is also great for city walks (you can even cross the Thames in the Foot Tunnel) and for access to the north via the Ferry - which is a great fun trip anyway! The area is also prime for access to the areas north of the river such as Stratford.

The main residential areas of Woolwich are undergoing enormous change, though this varies from place to place. There are streets of good, great value Victorian terraces around the water's edge, but the big news here is of course the updating of the old warehouses and other industrial buildings, with some lovely developments going up, offering wonderful views, great accommodation at excellent value for riverside apartments. Towards Charlton there are good streets of Victorian terraces as well as more modern 20th Century houses, many semidetached with offstreet parking. Around Woolwich Common are large and impressive Victorian houses, many of which are now maisonettes and flats of course. As one heads towards Plumstead and Shooters Hill, more Victorian terraces offer access to the Common, and are amongst the most desirable properties of the area - aside from the up and coming, impressive developments along the water, and the excellent new developments east of Woolwich of flats and houses in the Thamesmead area.

Industrial property under serious regeneration and plush waterside living, good local resources and great value Victorian homes make Woolwich an excellent place to look for first time buyers, City workers looking for views and space, and commuters after a great deal.
