Greenwich named as one of world's top 10 destinations
People seeking flats to rent in Greenwich will be moving to one of the most attractive cultural destinations in the world, according to a leading travel guide.
The renowned publication Frommer's recently named the district as one of the top ten global destinations for 2012, making it the only UK region included on the prestigious list.
Frommer's choice reflects the fact that Greenwich - which will be designated as a royal borough for the first time next month - is set to become a hotbed of cultural happenings in the next year, thanks in part to the approaching London Olympic and Paralympic Games.
A total of 34 Olympic events in nine different sporting disciplines are to be hosted in Greenwich, which is the largest venue for the Games outside of the Olympic Park itself.
Greenwich Park will host equestrian events and modern pentathlon and Woolwich Barracks will stage shooting events, while the Greenwich Arena will be the location for the gymnastics and basketball finals.
The games will coincide with a cultural festival that will take place across the streets and open spaces of the area, as well as a new National Maritime Museum exhibition and the Sail Royal Greenwich sailing event.
Moreover, next year will also see the historic Cutty Sark ship restored to its position in the centre of Greenwich town centre.
Chris Roberts, leader of Greenwich Council, said: "Greenwich is a destination that is known throughout the world, attracting some 18 million visitors each year to its unrivalled collection of historic buildings and open spaces, its riverfront and its cultural attractions."
It has also recently been announced that the Olympic Torch relay route for the 2012 Games is set to begin its journey in Greenwich, with the world-famous Prime Meridian Line set to be one of the locations visited.
