London City Airport expansion 'will boost SE London'
The prospective expansion of London City Airport will only bring positives to the surrounding areas of South-East London, it has been claimed.
Property website Buy Association said that the expansion of the airport, in close reach of financial hub Canary Wharf, would see the area's growing transport links boosted, while avoiding any negative effects.
London City Airport handled a record 2.9 million passengers over 2007 – representing a rise of 23 per cent over the previous year – and is now set to expand further, with Buy Association exempting the hub from the problems created by airport expansion elsewhere.
Paul Collins, a spokesperson for Buy Association, said: "It's difficult with transport networks because there are certain things that really push up property prices and really help things out and there are other things that might serve to put people off a little bit from certain areas."
He claimed however that in this case the effects would be largely positive and property for sale and rental in the area would surely boom, as no large jets use the urban hub, meaning that "the disruption is fairly minimal".
He explained that the expansion of London City Airport would add to the improving transport network of South-East London, with an of the Docklands Light Railway down to Woolwich expected, and the East London Line set to reopen in 2010.
