Deptford is one of the oldest areas of London, having been in continuous use since the 16th Century when it was a naval dockyard for amongst others, Francis Drake. It still has a dockside, rough and ready feel to it, but good investments, strong local community and the pride this community takes in its surroundings has begun to push Deptford into being a much-desired area for property.
There are consequences of Deptford's naval and industrial past one must take into account. There are few green spaces in the centre, though Fordham Park is close and a fine inner city park. What you get in Deptford is history, culture, and great community. This is a place of ancient cobbled streets, of old churches - St Nicholas dates to the 14th Century and 18th Century St Pauls is one of the best in England. It's also a place with a rich multicultural makeup, with provides excellent local cuisine, mostly affordable and cheerful. Deptford Market is one of the oldest and best in London, a place where bargains can always be had, and Deptford High Street has been cited as the most diverse and vibrant in London.
Deptford is very funky, with lots of artistic energy. It still has the cool associated with Christopher Marlowe being bumped off here, but now this energy has translated into music, dance, and theatre - the Laban Dance Centre is world famous, and Albany Theatre produces excellent community arts.
Property in Deptford varies from the old to the new with little in between. Victorian terraces and some lovely little cottages can be found in the St Johns area, and beneath the still-extant 60s blocks there are ex-council houses which are very affordable indeed. New projects have begun to see a more sensitive and sophisticated approach to urban dwelling than the massive old blocks, as low-rise housing projects make their presence felt and offer houses and apartments for very reasonable amounts.
Cool, urban, deeply historical, and a little rough around the edges, Deptford is one of the most cost-effective ways to live in a warm and friendly community in the heart of London.
