A large and bustling area for shopping and socialising, Orpington is at the southeast edge of London proper - past here, and you're truly into Kent. Diverse, busy and a perfect commuter centre, Orpington is a great blend of urban and rural and excellent for access to the coast as well as the centre of town.
What Orpington is best known for is its busy shopping; along with the Walnuts centre, which provides a wide range of places to eat as well as to shop (all the big names can be found here), there are a huge number of little local stores lining the high streets. Nearby, there are excellent shopping estates lining the roads towards London. Along with these there are - alongside some typical places to eat and drink - a good sprinkling of popular local eateries.
Being part of the Southeast London/North Kent border, Orpington benefits from the opening out of the city; there are excellent parks, little woods and golf courses nearby. As well as this the area is well provided with schools and is popular with parents looking for the best start for their kids; excellent selective and state schools are found all over the area, which is in the catchments for some of the best in the country.
Property here is mostly composed of the little roads that surround the town centre. These roads are filled with Victorian houses, both semis and terraces. As well as this, away into the Petts Wood area are excellent, detached properties which are typical of the large, detached houses of the area, and are extremely desirable. There are also - towards Chislehurst - some more affordable mid war, and more recent, build houses, mostly of semidetached plan.
For loyal locals, commuters and for growing families looking for security and good schools, Orpington is a perfect choice.
