On the quiet, Hither Green is becoming a bit of a middle class hangout - but it's so understated and so typically British about it that you'll easily miss an area that's on the up, if you don't have a look fast.

Hither Green might have the South Circular running through it but it's a green and pleasant area; even stepping a few feet down one of its pleasant little streets and you lose the noise and are immediately in a lovely little suburb. The amount of green helps here, and the area is served by three lovely parks - Manor House Gardens, Manor Park and Mountsfield. Local landmarks include the Hither Green Hospital, which has been redeveloped into flats and shopping facilities.

Hither Green's position, close to Blackheath, Catford and Lee Green as well as Lewisham, makes it easy for the area to be peaceful. There are a few shops here as well as a wonderful florist/café, You Don't Bring Me Flowers, which is very popular with the locals as a hangout. The hospital redevelopment has also brought more in the way of choice here - but there are excellent shops in the outlying areas, as well as very quick access to London via rail, so you're spoilt for choice.

This area is mostly dominated by Victorian and Edwardian homes; particularly in the Corbett Estate. But everywhere there are fine two-storey houses in little terraces, most with good gardens. As the area has become more and more middle class so the fitting and décor has gone up, although the good mix of local and newcomers makes this feel like a 'real' place and not just a commuter village. There are, in many of the houses, splendid maisonettes and flats which cater to the younger families and the professional couples. Prices are uniformly good and competitive.

Hither Green, with its excellent housing for couples and families, access, green space and local resources, is definitely one of the places to look in South London for a great deal.
