Area Feature

Tottenham is an area in the London borough of Haringey known for being diverse, cosmopolitan, vibrant and a hub for talent of many kinds. The area truly has something to offer that will appeal to absolutely everyone from every walk of life.

With six train stations, two underground stations and a variety of bus links, Tottenham is well-connected to the rest of London. However, there is not much the city can offer that Tottenham does not already have. A wide range of shops, bars, restaurants and entertainment can be found on the area's multicultural streets.

Housing in Tottenham

The majority of Tottenham’s houses are two-storey terraces, usually from the late Victorian or Edwardian period. Many of these are sold as one-bedroom or two-bedroom houses, while others are split into flats. South-west Tottenham is where the more expensive houses are located, making Seven Sisters or South Tottenham a good place to house hunt for people looking for more space.

There are several new developments in North Tottenham and around Tottenham Hale, whereas on the other end of the spectrum some wonderful old Georgian houses are to be found converted into flats around the Bruce Grove area.

The price of housing in Tottenham, like many other things in this wonderfully varied area, changes drastically depending on where you go. Overall, house prices are around the middle for London. You should expect to pay around £900 a month to rent, however there are areas where the cost of renting or buying is far lower or much higher.

Cosmopolitan and varied

According to research undertaken by the University College London, South Tottenham is the most ethnically diverse area in London, and possibly even in the whole of Europe. They have recorded 113 separate ethnic groups living in the area, speaking a grand total of 193 different languages between them.

What that leads to, of course, is a massively varied local culture. Different ethnic restaurants are everywhere, serving high-quality authentic dishes from a variety of cultures. Green Lanes, for example, is well known for its Turkish kebab houses that are so authentic they could be straight out of Istanbul. West Green Road is famous for its Congolese restaurants, and Greek restaurants are prevalent throughout Tottenham North and Tottenham South.

Historical Tottenham

Tottenham has a rich and detailed history, and remnants of the past can be found scattered throughout the area. Bruce Castle, for example, is a 16th-century manor house surrounded by 20 acres of parkland. The oldest parts of the building were built by William Compton, who was a member of Henry VIII’s court. It is now a museum, detailing the history of Haringey.

Elsewhere, the All Hallows Church on Church Lane is a beautiful old building and wonderful piece of local history. The church was first built in the 12th century, although only a few small parts of the building still date back to that time. The church has famously bee painted by, among others, John Constable.

Shopping in Tottenham

Although not necessarily known for it, Tottenham is home to a good number of high-quality shopping areas. Tottenham Hale Retail Park is a large-scale retail park on Broad Lane, that features a variety of big-budget shops. The area around Broad Lane has even more shops, boasting everything from high-street goods to independent music shops.

Elsewhere in Tottenham, West Green Road is known for its shops, and is the focus of a renovation project undertaken by Haringey Council. A total of £50,000 has been allocated to transform this area into one of Tottenham’s leading shopping streets. Other areas of note include High Road, which features multicultural shops and markets, and Tottenham Road.

Tottenham’s talent

Tottenham is becoming well-known for the stream of local entertainers it has produced in recent years. Not only is chart phenomenon Adele from the area, but so are a large number of rappers and MCs from Tottenham’s growing grime scene. Hip-hop stars Chipmunk, Skepta, Wretch 32, JME and Cell 22 are all from Tottenham, and judging by the thriving music scene in the area they will not be the last local performers to find success.

It is not just music, but comedy as well that Tottenham is becoming known for. Funnymen Eddie Kadi and Kevin J are from the area. Kadi recently headlined at the O2 Arena, despite having very little television exposure, which should give some idea of the level of entertainment available in Tottenham.

Tottenham schools

Again, the variety of Tottenham comes into play here. The schools of Tottenham do vary, and it is definitely worth doing a good amount of research beforehand. However, there are certainly enough good schools to ensure your children get the education they need.

A high number of Tottenham’s secondary schools can boast that over 70 per cent of their students achieve at least five A* to C grades at GCSE, far above the national average of 58.2 per cent. Overall, schools throughout the borough of Haringey achieve roughly around the national average.

Transport in Tottenham

Tottenham is well-serviced by the London Underground, with two stations to take travellers into the city or out to Walthamstow. Both Tottenham Hale and Seven Sisters are on the Victoria line, and take people through the centre of London, straight to King’s Cross, Oxford Street and through to Vauxhall and Brixton.

Elsewhere, the overland rail links connect Tottenham to the rest of the country. Tottenham has five train stations: South Tottenham, Seven Sisters, Tottenham Hale, Bruce Grove, White Hart Lane and Northumberland Park. Tottenham has a good bus service, and is well-connected to the rest of London by road.
