There aren't many places easier to get from and to - at least not in the Southeast London area - than New Eltham. Its houses are splendid and affordable, and the area one of the richest in terms of resources around.
Bordering Chislehurst, Sidcup and its elder brother Eltham, New Eltham's development began in the late 1870s. It remains however less developed than areas like Eltham, and its town centre is more that of a village. There are good local stores and some nice restaurants that are very popular with locals, but this is a place to live, rather than to shop - although it has the benefits of its larger neighbours all around. New Eltham has excellent all-year-round entertainment and social life. It's got enthusiastic local sports teams as well as amateur dramatics and opera.
Despite its 19th Century roots, its property is a blend of later properties. Here there are a profusion of very nice 1930s properties, as well as some Edwardian areas. There are also developments of executive houses to the east.
The numerous attractions of the area include its access to the broad green areas around Eltham and Chislehurst - a good mix of fields, commons and woods. It's right next to the ancient and lovely Oxleas Woods, providing great walks all year round. It's also close to the great schools of Chislehurst, Sidcup, Orpington and other areas - and this double means that the great houses of New Eltham are perfect for their upmarket commuter families - but are still competitively priced.
