Area Comments

Formerly known as a tough East London borough, the Dalston renaissance has taken hold in earnest. What started out as speculation on very low prices has been borne out, as Dalston, whilst still a highly affordable area, has become a fashionable and funky place for couples, single professionals and families looking for a bargain.

Let's make no bones about it, Dalston has some excellent properties. These are mostly in the form of the large Victorian houses which line some of its best streets such as Sandringham Road and Colvestone Crescent. Three and four storey properties are available, with the latter near to Dalston's centre being extremely sought after. Dalston is, overall, all fast becoming a first choice for many middle class families. In other areas the feel of the area's previous identity is still apparent, but the large council blocks have been thinned out as estates like Holly Street have been turned into low rise, sophisticated modern developments.

Dalston is extremely multicultural and even amid great social change has remained a typical East London borough at heart. It's proud of its amenities and uniqueness of its facilities. Dalston is home to one of London's best and truest local markets on Ridley Road - a genuine London market with bargains galore. As part of Hackney, Dalston isn't far from greenery with London Fields close by, still one of the most beautiful and unexplored areas of the city. There are even some genuine architectural marvels in Dalston, fortunately preserved during the boom times of the 80s when the area was less popular; most notable amongst these is the Dalston Rio Cinema, an art deco glory.

There are great community efforts in Dalston to maintain its best points whilst admitting change. These result in a fantastic fusion of old and new. Events and arts are celebrated in Centerprise, a community bookshop. There is great music and theatre as well as affordable, but high quality eateries and friendly local pubs.

Rich in culture and history, a bustling and friendly inner London borough, Dalston has excellent properties and is still as yet to feel the sting of overdevelopment.
