Work starts on Hackney regeneration project
Barratt Homes has started work on one of the capital's most ambitious regeneration schemes - a £140 million transformation of Dalston in Hackney.
The project entails the creation of some 550 new homes as well as retail space, public facilities such as a library, and even a brand new station - Dalston Junction - on the new East London railway.
Barratt was selected as the preferred developer by a plethora of public bodies including Hackney Council, the Mayor of London's Office, Transport for London and the London Development Agency.
At least 30 of the new homes have already been reserved and according to Alastair Baird, Barratt East London managing director, the project will help lift Hackney "into another league".
"Dalston Square is the next big piece of the London jigsaw," he said, insisting it will "revitalise the heart of Dalston and encourage more investment into the area".
Mr Baird added: "Dalston is in close proximity to fashionable and flourishing areas like Hoxton, Shoreditch, London Fields, Islington, Clerkenwell and the City, and the transformation of Dalston will fill in the gap."
