Young people 'concerned' about house prices
The south-east's UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) has placed access to affordable housing top of its political agenda, it emerged this week.
Members of the UKYP outlined their concerns at a recent sitting in which they tackled a series of key issues that impact upon the lives of young Brits, ranging from housing matters to financial responsibility.
The body urged local authorities to do more to prepare young people for the transition away from their family home, noting that house prices in the capital in particular have surged in recent years.
"Moving out of home and accessing housing is particularly important to young people living in the south-east," commented Fiona McGee, UKYP south-east coordinator. "House prices and rents are prohibitively expensive and it is virtually impossible to access affordable social housing."
London mayor Ken Livingstone recently unveiled a new drive to build 50,000 affordable homes across the capital over the next three years - a target which the UKYP says is insufficient.
The average age of first-time homebuyer in the UK is currently 34, meaning that a clear majority of young Brits rely on rental property throughout their twenties.
