'Top tenants' live in London
A new survey has named the ideal tenant in the UK as a female professional working in the health sector, aged between 36 and 45, earning between £20-30,000 and living in London.
The Halifax poll identified this profile as that of the most popular kind of person to have as a tenant, something that may particularly interest anyone who fits the description and is considering renting a house or flat in London.
In the survey, it was revealed that 77 per cent of landlords would prefer to have a female, a quarter would like someone from London and 32 per cent would be happiest with someone whose income was in the £20-30,000 bracket.
The profile was completed by 24 per cent saying they would like to rent to a doctor and nine per cent to a nurse, while 67 per cent would prefer letting to over-25s.
One good reason to rent rather than buy in London at present is that property prices in the capital are now falling faster than the country as a whole.
This month's Chesterton Poll of Polls revealed that the average house price in London fell 13.3 per cent in the year to December 2008, compared with 12.8 per cent for the UK as a whole.
