Those renting flats in London may get buzz from scheme
Those seeking property to rent in London may be able to enjoy a taste of under a new scheme being launched by Mayor Boris Johnson.
He has launched the Capital Bee campaign in which 50 community groups around the metropolis will be given the opportunity to manage a bee colony.
The hives will be set up across the city in a bid to reverse the decline in the urban population of bees, which has ecological and economic consequences, not least as most of the honey consumed in the UK is produced overseas.
Renters in London may be able to join in one of these projects and enjoy some bee-keeping themselves, producing honey and beeswax along the way.
In October, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said it would be appointing 400 teachers to help backyard bee keepers protect the insects better over winter to reduce the number dying in the cold weather.
