Tenants 'should be prepared' in order to protect deposits
Those renting a house or flat in London have been advised to take steps to protect deposits.
According to mydeposits.co.uk, the most common cause for landlords to withhold money is cleaning costs, with this accounting for 38 per cent of all disputes.
But tenants can avoid this by taking precautions and being prepared, the site notes, as the holiday season approaches and many plan parties.
Chairman David Salusbury remarked: "Christmas and New Year gatherings pose a number of hazards which could cause tenants to lose their deposits," adding: "Tenants could find themselves paying for a festive party months after the fun has ended."
Asking guests to smoke outside and moving valuable objects into rooms not being used to prevent breakages are some of the measures proposed.
Change of address service iammoving.com recently noted that an increasing number of people in London are choosing to rent rather than buy, as falling prices present a risk of negative equity.
