Tenants' Associations 'good for solving problems' with landlords
People considering whether to look for property to rent in London are being told the formation of a recognised tenants association (RTA) is an excellent way to solve problems with landlords that might arise.
Bob Smytherman, chairman of the Federation of Private Residents' Association, indicated that if individuals can translate "very clear messages" to those letting homes, it makes it difficult for them to say no and not offer remedial action on a given matter.
He suggested that RTAs need not be "stuffy and burdensome" and may not have the kind of pressure attached to them some individuals expect.
His comments follow recommendations from the government-funded free legal advice service Lease, which said RTAs would improve matters for those living in such circumstances.
Suggestions from residents' bodies that forming a tenants' association can help alleviate problems with landlords might encourage more people to consider looking for property to rent in the London borough of Epping Forest or elsewhere in the country.
