New sub-committee for London housing
London mayor Ken Livingstone is to chair a new sub-committee tasked with speeding up the capital's £3 billion homebuilding programme.
A new wing of the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) has been established that will specifically focus on London-based development projects with a view to expediting their construction.
Among the key goals set out by the London HCA board are increasing the number of affordable family-sized homes; stepping up delivery of eco-friendly sustainable homes; and fostering community spirit through regeneration.
Following the announcement of the new sub-committee, housing minister Caroline Flint affirmed the government's commitment to addressing the ongoing housing stock shortage. She said it is "essential" that the number of affordable housing developments be increased.
"By strengthening our relationship with the mayor's office and giving a stronger voice to London boroughs we can ensure we create new communities and regenerate deprived areas in a much more joined-up way," Ms Flint added.
Homebuilding in the capital has hit a 30-year high according to a new report by the Greater London Authority, with some 33,000 new homes being built in 2007 alone.
