New licensing scheme for letting agents in London
Letting Agents in London and the rest of the UK will now have a new licensing scheme to follow.
The Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) has established the new initiative to ensure letting firms adhere to the highest standards.
It comes after the property group found that hundreds of thousands of pounds of consumers' money is lost to unprotected and unethical Letting Agents in the UK.
A survey from ARLA found that 95 per cent of consumers thought Letting Agents should be licensed and were surprised to learn that - prior to this week - there was no such programme in place.
Housing minister Iain Wright and representatives from property website LandlordZONE are among those who have backed the new scheme,
Ruth Lilley, head of membership and professional development of ARLA, said: "ARLA has lobbied the government for ten years to assist us in establishing higher industry standards."
The new development will create "the gold standard for Letting Agents in the UK", she added.
