More tenants of property to rent in UK claim benefits
Recent research has suggested that more tenants of property to rent in London and the UK are on housing benefits.
A number of reasons have been given for this, including Clarity Commercial's viewpoint that it has a lot to do with the current economic climate.
Unemployment levels are high - they moved passed the two million mark in March this year - and are expected to increase before the end of 2009.
The effect this has had on the rental sector is that more tenants with good references can now apply for benefits.
Chris Jenkins, manager of Clarity Commercial, said many people who are lloking for property to rent in London and the rest of the country are "blue collar, semi-skilled workers who are able to ... pass credit scores but are out of work due to the current economic climate".
He also said landlords find it easier and cheaper to find a tenant by asking the council to recommend someone who receives benefits.
