Minister praises underage knife sale operation
Measures to crack down on underage knife sales in London are proving effective, it has been claimed.
The Trading Standards Service has been carrying out the largest undercover operation of its kind in a bid to identify shops that sell the potential weapons to those under the age of 18.
Nearly 800 test purchases were carried out, with 19 per cent resulting in sales.
And although he stated that this is still too high, minister for London Tony McNulty noted that similar initiatives in local authorities in other parts of the country have showed much higher proportions.
"I fully support these operations and am confident they will ultimately lead to fewer knives being carried by teenagers on the capital's streets," he added.
Last week Mr McNulty observed a fall in knife crimes since the government began its Tackling Knives Action Programme six months ago - which may have made London a safer place to live.
