Mayor pledges investment in public message
London mayor Boris Johnson is pledging to continue investment in order to ensure that the capital withstands the economic downturn.
In a New Year's Eve message, which has been recorded for broadcast in the build-up to midnight, the mayor says money will be provided to improve transport as well as fight crime.
Mr Johnson makes reference to the film Apocalypse Now, as he states: "Some day, this recession is going to end."
The message, along with those from several celebrities and public figures, will be projected on to the Shell Building as Londoners wait the city's fireworks display on the Thames.
And in it the mayor also highlights the opportunities available to businesses in the capital, as well as saying: "London has some of the best bars, restaurants and hotels in the world. I can think of no better city to spend New Year's Eve."
Transport for London has announced that free travel will be available on most public transport services between 11:45 and 04:30 GMT, in order to help those returning home from the various events in the city.
