Mayor launches Decent Homes programme
Mayor Lutfur Rahman has launched the Decent Homes programme, which will improve the quality of property to rent in the London borough of Tower Hamlets.
The mayor decided to add extra money to the Decent Homes fund, meaning that some £130 million is now available for the council to ensure that all of the homes it runs are warm, weather-proof and feature modern kitchens and bathrooms.
"Housing is my number one priority. I believe every tenant has the right to a modern, warm and comfortable home," said Mr Rahman.
He went on to say that he is committed to bringing all of the council's 9,000 homes up to a decent standard.
"That is why I will use our own resources to fill the funding gap left by central government," he explained.
Next month, focus groups will be held to allow local residents to share their views on how they think the borough's housing service can be improved.
