Low Emission Zone comes into force
London's Low Emission Zone (LEZ) became a reality today, as the capital looks to create healthier living conditions by placing new restrictions on vehicles.
Mayor Ken Livingstone's new scheme focuses on the emissions of diesel-powered lorries, coaches and buses, demanding that they meet new standards or pay £200 to enter the Greater London area.
With asthma and other breathing problems affected by the capital's polluted air, the zone will be enforced and monitored by CCTV 24 hours a day and seven days a week, with the boundaries covering most of Greater London.
The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, said: "Thousands of Londoners suffer ill-health from pollution released by traffic fumes. This is why we are launching the London-wide Low Emission Zone.
"It will improve Londoners' quality of life, and clean up London's air, which is currently among the most polluted in Europe. The positive effects of the zone will be felt across the capital."
Some will be disappointed that LEZ charging excludes the busy M25, even when it enters the zone, as the thoroughfare will be considered a diversionary zone for those avoiding going further into London.
