Londoners maintain "spirit and ambition", says mayor
The City of London has been described as "one of the most exciting places" in the world, following its New Year's Eve celebrations.
Large crowds turned out for the renowned fireworks display in the capital, with people lining the banks of the Thames to catch a glimpse of the show.
And Mayor Boris Johnson stated that it represented the determination of those living in the capital to weather the economic downturn.
"London has shown we will hold on to our spirit and ambition and has set the tone of positivity and optimism we need to help take us through these difficult times," he said.
Mr Johnson was one of a number of public figures who recorded messages to be broadcast during the celebrations, with the mayor's promising investment in transport and crime fighting.
Last week he announced that London residents on income support would benefit from half-price fares on bus and tram travel, with the initiative taking effect from today.
