Landlords criticised over pet rules
Growing demand for property to rent in London has led to more pets being abandoned because of landlord rules, it has emerged.
The Dogs Trust has revealed that three in four landlords do not allow tenants to keep pets in their rented properties.
The charity is urging landlords to allow tenants to keep pets as more and more people turn to flats to rent in London due to the credit crunch.
"Pet owners who need to rent privately are being forced to live in unsuitable properties, or rent with their pets without consent from their landlord," Clarissa Baldwin, chief executive of the Dogs Trust, told the BBC.
The charity added that stringent pet rules in rental properties are among some of the main reasons why dogs are handed in.
It has now launched a campaign to encourage landlords to allow tenants to keep pets and is offering tips to those who rent property.
This comes after news that more and more people in the UK are being forced to sell-up and rent property as the credit crunch hits.
