Hybrid buses 'will cut emissions in London'
London residents are set to benefit from an improved environment as a fleet of hybrid buses is due to come into operation.
Mayor Boris Johnson has set a target of reducing the capital's emissions by 60 per cent by 2025.
And Transport for London (TFL) has announced that the new buses will help to contribute to that, with each using less fuel and cutting carbon dioxide output by 40 per cent.
The body aims to have 56 of the hybrid vehicles on the road by the end of January 2009, with a further 300 planned by 2011.
Managing director for surface transport at TFL David Brown described the buses as "cleaner, quieter and more pleasant for passengers and Londoners on the whole, but also more efficient and environmentally-friendly".
Mr Johnson recently announced that 10,000 new street trees would be planted to improve the environment in the capital, while residents are being offered the chance to vote for parks to receive funding for improvements.
