Hospitality body calls for increase in apprenticeships
Londoners hoping to enter the hospitality industry could be set to benefit from new training opportunities, should employees respond positively to calls to provide more apprenticeships.
People 1st - a skills council for the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism sector - urged firms to take on more trainees.
It noted that 30,000 vacancies are being recorded each month and that demand for workers is particularly likely to increase in the capital as the 2012 Olympics approach.
People 1st chief executive Brian Wisdom noted that residents could see significant benefits from taking up apprenticeship opportunities.
"Research shows that apprentices will, on average, earn £100,000 more in a lifetime than other employees," he stated.
His comments follow the announcement that 3,000 apprenticeships will be created in the capital over the next three years.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson revealed that the Greater London Authority is on track to meet its target, while also encouraging more of its suppliers to offer schemes.
