High street names increase access to London toilets
Several leading high street names have signed up to the Open London scheme, Mayor Boris Johnson has revealed.
The initiative is designed to improve the ability of Londoners and visitors to access toilets, as public facilities in the capital have been in decline.
According to the mayor, a 40 per cent drop has been seen since 1999 - with older people and families with young children most affected.
Through Open London, Tesco, John Lewis, Sainsbury's, Marks & Spencer and Borders will all allow the public to use toilets without having to make a purchase.
"Letting people know where they can use the toilet
will not only make the city a more civilised and pleasant place to live, but also to visit," said Mr Johnson, adding that businesses are also likely to benefit due to the increased numbers on their premises.
Transport for London recently launched a new Tube map that provides greater information about facilities available at stations.
