Healthy living drive for Tower Hamlets
Residents of Tower Hamlets are to be encouraged to live healthier lifestyles under new government plans.
The borough is set to receive a share of £30 million of funding, along with eight towns across England.
Health secretary Alan Johnson announced that the 'Healthy Towns' will challenge the growing problem of obesity, which causes 9,000 premature deaths in the UK each year.
Those involved must promote healthy living, he said, adding: "Each town has come up with innovative ways - such as a loyalty schemes or cycling projects - to help their residents to be more active."
In Tower Hamlets, which is to receive £4.68 million of the funding, fast food outlets, restaurants and shops on the route to Olympic Park are to be rewarded for providing healthy eating options.
The borough has been shortlisted for the Local Government Chronicle's Council of the Year Award, the winner of which will be announced in March 2009.
