Havering town centres given monetary boost
People living in property to rent in the London borough of Havering, and others in the area, are set to benefit from improvements in a couple of town centres.
Havering Council has managed to secure £445,000 from the Mayor of London's Outer London fund, which it will use to upgrade Rainham and Hornchurch.
Projects which complement regeneration schemes taking place in the two town centres will be given the money.
Next year, improvements are set to begin taking place in Hornchurch, and this additional £225,000 will go towards funding a promotional campaign aimed at supporting local firms and special cultural facilities.
The money will go towards providing better Christmas decorations and improving signage, among other things.
There will also be a range of arts and crafts-based activities offered to youngsters in the area, as well as further work done to design exhibition space in Fairkytes arts centre.
Rainham village will benefit from the remaining £220,000 from the pot. This will go towards achieving the long-term aims of the Rainham Compass project, through working with local people to improve Rainham and South Hornchurch.
Current and future events in the town will take place, thanks to the funding, including activities at Christmas and outdoor performances in Rainham Hall Gardens.
The Shop Local campaign is set to continue in the town, encouraging people to opt for local businesses where possible.
Councillor Robert Benham, cabinet member for community empowerment, said: "This is fantastic news for the residents and businesses of Hornchurch and Rainham, the money will ensure the effects of our current regeneration of Hornchurch town centre and the Rainham Compass programme will improve these town centres for residents and businesses for years to come."
Havering Council recently announced it would be enforcing width restrictions on the Heath Park Road/Victoria Road railway bridge after an assessment by Network Rail.
