Harrow receives funding to support Christmas shopping schemes
People living in flats to rent in Harrow are benefiting from an injection of funding from London authorities that is helping to make the area a shopper's paradise over Christmas.
Harrow Council has been allocated £496,000 via the Outer London Fund to spend on measures to increase footfall and bolster local business performance over the festive period.
As a result, the local authority has been able to organise a late-night shopping event at St Ann's and St George's retail centres today (December 15th 2011), during which local businesses will open until 21:00 in order to allow locals to stock up on presents and seasonal essentials.
The event will feature street entertainers putting on a show for those who attend, while free goodie bags full of offers will be handed out to the first 1,000 people who show up.
Keith Ferry, portfolio holder for planning and economic development on Harrow Council, said: "This late-night shopping event is about giving shoppers extra time to pick up what they need, as well as showcasing the great range of shops in Harrow town centre."
This comes after the local authority organised a well-attended Christmas light switch-on on December 1st, during which hundreds of residents turned up to watch X Factor contestant Johnny Robinson kick off the seasonal celebrations.
It also follows a similar celebration organised by the council in north Harrow on December 10th, which saw shoppers entertained by carol singers, street artists and face-painting stalls.
Harrow's town centre initiatives have also been welcomed warmly by London mayor Boris Johnson, who was responsible for setting up the Outer London Fund to help rejuvenate the capital's high street.
"Our local town centres and high streets have a huge part to play in London's future economic growth, so I'm delighted that we've been able to support Harrow town centre's exciting plans for the festive season," he said.
