'Essential' to have property to rent in London and UK
Having property to rent in London and other parts of the UK is an "essential" part of the housing market, it has been suggested.
It provides a "flexible approach to housing" and allows people to take employment opportunities as and when they arise, according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
The government has announced this week that there will be a number of changes to the private rented sector, and it has given the chance for RICS to highlight its importance to the overall marketplace.
"Growth in the private rented sector must be encouraged to provide a choice of homes and as an alternative to owning a home," it said.
"It is essential to have a range of housing options so people can live in the appropriate property for their income and situation in life."
Any measures taken by the government - one of which could be the introduction of a new landlords' register - should be taken quickly and made using existing regulatory structures wherever possible, the group added.
