Cooper to announce housing plans
Housing minister Yvette Cooper is set to address the housing industry at the end of January, with key decisions that will affect both rental and sale property likely to be unveiled.
Ms Cooper's speech on January 31st will see her address the housing industry alongside representatives from the Chartered Institute of Housing and the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, with the housing issue now a high government priority.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has pledged to build three million new homes by 2020, making Ms Cooper's speech at the Cicero Forum a crucial opportunity for spelling out the measures the government will be taking.
A wide forum of practitioners and representatives from the both public and private sectors will use the conference to discuss UK homebuilding plans, and particularly the government proposals in recent green paper 'Homes for the Future'.
The key challenge for the housing minister and for all those present will be to provide credible solutions to the gap between housing supply and demand, which has created shortages of houses for sale and to rent, especially in crowded areas like London.
Ms Cooper recently laid out plans for the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), a new body to be endowed with responsibility for delivering new housing and community facilities across the UK.
