Coalition calls for 'well-insulated flats to rent'
People looking at flats to rent in the London borough of Haringey may benefit from a new coalition.
Formed by 15 organisations, including Friends of the Earth, Citizens Advice and the Crisis and Disability Alliance, the group wants a new law to protect tenants from cold properties that could be potential health hazards.
It hopes to make it illegal for abodes to be rented out unless their insulation meets energy efficiency requirements.
Dave Timms, climate campaigner at Friends of the Earth, described it as a "disgrace" that "millions of vulnerable people in Britain live in poorly insulated and dangerously cold homes that make them ill, while paying far more than they can afford trying to stay warm".
The alliance also highlighted that one-fifth of private tenants cannot afford to heat their home to a reasonable standard because they live in fuel poverty.
This news comes after the British Property Federation announced it was backing a Shelter-led initiative to stamp out rogue landlords.
