Boris promises safer transport
New London mayor Boris Johnson has vowed to put "safety and security" at the heart of his transport policy.
The gaffe-prone politician today (May 16th) launched a new initiative geared towards cutting crime on the capital's public transport network.
Flanked by Metropolitan Police commissioner Sir Ian Blair and transport commissioner Peter Hendy, Boris outlined plans to dispatch high-visibility police officers to all London bus hubs.
He said that 440-uniformed officers and 1,600 special constables would be tasked with stamping out antisocial behaviour, ensuring that all residents can enjoy peaceful journeys.
Commenting on the new initiative, Sir Ian said: "We are extremely grateful to the mayor and Transport for London for providing additional funding which has allowed us to enhance the service we already provide to London.
"Building on the success of the MPS Safer Transport Teams and Safer Neighbourhood Teams, this additional resource will allow us to provide extra security and safety on the transport network to make using public transport as safe and enjoyable an experience as possible."
