Barclays Cycle Hire shortlisted for design award
A cycle hire scheme that is open to people living in property to rent in the City of London has been recognised in a global competition.
Barclays Cycle Hire has been included on the Brit Insurance Design Awards, which seek to celebrate the year's best design in seven categories including transport, graphics, fashion and architecture.
More than 2.6 million journeys have taken place on the scheme's bicycles since it was launched by London major Boris Johnson in 2010, while over 110,000 users have registered with the project.
Kulveer Ranger, Mr Johnson's transport advisor, commented: "The Mayor is incredibly proud of his new blue bikes and the way they have been embraced by Londoners and visitors and is delighted to have been nominated for this award."
The self-service scheme involves users taking bicycles from docking stations located around London and using them for up to 24 hours at a time before returning the bikes. Costs for the cycles start from just £1 for 30 minutes of use.
