Non-energy efficient homes 'should not be rented'
The Energy Saving Trust (EST) has revealed that it is lobbying the government to prevent certain energy inefficient properties from going on the rental market.
According to a spokesperson for the group, there are some high-carbon-emitting homes that should not be allowed to be sold or let.
Since October last year, all homes that are available for sale or to rent have an Energy Performance Certificate that offers a home energy efficiency rating from A-G.
Bricks and mortar in the F-G bracket should not be sold or let out until they have made the required improvements to move up to at least Grade E, the EST representative explained.
"Our proposals are only that regulation should come into force only in seven years time," she remarked. "And we believe grants, financing packages and advice should make it possible for everyone who wants to act to do so in the next few years."
In Yorkshire, Kirklees council has managed to create 120 jobs by establishing a project to insulate 21,000 homes in the region.
