Tower Hamlets bids for city status
People living in property to rent in the London borough of Tower Hamlets are being urged to back a bid for the area to be given city status.
The local council, Canary Wharf Group, local businesses and community groups are all campaigning for the borough to be recognised as a city.
It is contending with the likes of Middlesbrough, Blackpool and Reading.
The mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, said having city status would put Tower Hamlets firmly on the map as a great place to live, work and visit.
"I feel being a city would be a fantastic boost to the borough and really show what we have to offer," he added.
Mr Rahman went on to comment on the "vibrant community spirit" that is present in the borough.
This month, the Department for Education approved plans to open a free school, called Canary Wharf College, in the borough.
