Tenants should beware illegal gas-fitters
People living in rented accommodation may wish to ensure they check that any engineer hired by their landlord to service or repair their gas appliances is legally qualified, following recent news.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) issued the warning to Britons after a man from Hull pleaded guilty to seven breaches of Regulation 3 of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 and four breaches of the Trade Descriptions Act 1968, resulting in him being fined.
Andrew Ian McLatchie was found not to be a registered gas fitted.
People looking for property to rent in Notting Hill, or any other part of London, may wish to make sure their landlord presents them with a gas safety certificate to prove that all gas appliances in the property have had a recent service.
They should also keep in mind that any engineer hired by their landlord is Gas Safe registered.
HSE inspector Chris Chambers said: "We urge homeowners to be on their guard when having gas work carried out at their properties and to always check the fitter is on the Gas Safe Register."
