Southwark to get Dickens statue
People in flats to rent in Southwark may be pleased to learn that the local council plans to install a commemorative statue installed between Blackfriars Road and Union Street to celebrate the English novelist Charles Dickens' 200th birthday.
The artwork is intended to recreate the sign of the Dog and Pot, referencing an original ironmonger's sign which stood in the spot from the end of the 18th century until 1931.
Councillor Veronica Ward, cabinet member for Culture, Leisure, Sport and the Olympics said: "This wooden sculpture will add some real historical interest, not only to Blackfriars Road and Union Street, but to the borough as a whole."
Walking home from his work in a blacking factory at Charing Cross to his accommodation in Lant Street in the 1820s, Southwark Dickens reputedly passed the original sign regularly.
Dickens is recognised as one of England's foremost novelists and socialist reformers, and is perhaps most famous for Oliver Twist, which has been a staple of school curriculums for many years.
