Southwark to be London's 'greenest' borough
The London borough of Southwark has signalled its intentions to become the capital's greenest borough with a new recycling project.
A new £665 million recycling facility capable of processing 87,000 tonnes of material every year is being planned for the Old Kent Road by Veolia Environmental Services.
The project is not only set to make Southwark the capital's 'greenest' borough, but is also likely to make it one of the cleanest, something which would be a major draw for many people looking to rent in the area.
Edward Thomas, managing director of Veolia Environmental Services, said: "The new facility provides the opportunity for Southwark residents to recycle and recover waste within the borough and maximise landfill diversion.
"Thanks to continued effort Southwark's recycling rate is up 20 per cent but the borough aims to be recycling 50 per cent of waste by 2020."
Subject to planning approval, Veolia Environmental Services will commence construction in 2009, with completion due in 2011.
