Southwark park to receive cash injection
Burgess Park, in the London borough of Southwark, has been announced as the winner of a £2 million grant for an upgrade.
Mayor Boris Johnson selected the park on the advice of a panel of experts, following nominations from local boroughs.
"Londoners deserve a better quality of life and making a greener, more attractive city is a top priority," he remarked, adding that the "whopping" fund will allow "an ambitious revamp making it a destination for all Londoners to enjoy".
Meanwhile, ten other parks have been selected by a public vote to receive £400,000 each.
Over 110,000 people took part, choosing which spaces would receive a makeover from the shortlist of 47 after boroughs nominated close to 100.
Local government minister John Healey recently revealed that £2.6 million had been earmarked for Southwark, with the council set to decide how best to use the money in order to meet the challenges presented by the recession.
